Background
With rising costs associated with building maintenance and a shortage of volunteers, the Windsor Association of the Deaf made the difficult decision in 2002 to sell its building on Wyandotte Street East. This closure left many Deaf and Hard of Hearing community members without a dedicated space to gather, socialize, and experience a sense of belonging.
In response, we became determined to find meaningful and resourceful ways to create opportunities for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals, children, and families to share their beliefs, culture, language, and lived experiences. Many Deaf and Hard of Hearing adults and youth had become increasingly isolated within their schools, workplaces, and daily environments. A community-centered event was needed—one that could restore connection and strengthen identity.
In 2003, D.E.A.F. Jamboree was established by our Founding Chairperson, Kenneth Brockway, with the purpose rebuilding community through shared outdoor gatherings, socialization, and celebration of Deaf culture.
After twenty years of dedicated leadership, Kenneth has chosen to pass the responsibilities of D.E.A.F. Jamboree to Darcie Elmslie, ensuring that the event continues to grow, evolve, and serve future generations through the support and guidance of a committed organizing committee.
It began with a vision.
A dream that persisted in his mind.
Looking back 20 years ago,
He felt something was missing.
Without the hall, Deaf spaces disappeared
And with that
Windsor’s Deaf Community.
It was time that his imagination…
Transform into reality.
DEAF Jamboree
Was born…
And his dream lives on.
~Founder, Ken Brockway: Established 2003

By celebrating Deaf values an traditions in these welcoming spaces, we aim to be a leading resource for individuals interested in using, learning, and practicing American Sign Language (ASL).
The vision of D.E.A.F. Jmaboree is to enrich Deaf lives through shared picnic and camping experiences, ensuring a strong Deaf future, uniting Deaf and hearing cultures through open-air gatherings, and building a world of belonging and growth.
